Spurs Center David Robinson Enjoying A Drink After Quadruple Double

The most recent quadruple double in NBA history happened on 2/17/1994. David Robinson’s quadruple double consisted of 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks, and 10 assists.

It happened during a Spurs win over the Detroit Pistons, the Spurs winning the game by 19 points.

On February 17, 1994, David Robinson aka The Admiral became the fourth player in NBA recorded history to record a quadruple double.

The quadruple double is possible the rarest individual statistical achievement in the NBA. Robinson is the only member of the 1992 Dream Team to accomplish the feat – something not even Michael Jordan did.

What Is A Quadruple Double?

Just like a double-double or a triple-double, a quadruple-double happens when a basketball player records double digits in 4 major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, and/or blocks).

How many quadruple doubles have happened in NBA history? Only 4 players in NBA history have ever achieved it. There have been just four quadruple-doubles since the NBA started officially recording steals and blocked shots during the 1973-74 season.

The first quadruple double in NBA history was Nate Thurmond (October 18, 1974)
who had 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocks in a game in 1974. “Nate the Great.” went off in the first game of the 1974-1975 season and Thurmond helped lead the Bulls to a 120-105 victory in overtime.

After that, the second was defensive stud Alvin Robertson (February 18, 1986). While playing for the San Antonio Spurs, Robertson led them to a 120-114 victory over the Suns. His quadruple-double came on 8-17 shooting from the field and 4-6 from the free-throw line. Robertson had 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in 1986.

The third quadruple double happened in 1990, (March 29, 1990). Hakeem Olajuwon had 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 blocks. Olajuwon led the Rockets to a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, and against fellow quadruple double club member Alvin Robertson.

Then, in 1994, David Robinson quadruple doubled via had 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocks.

With this list, it would be great if the NBA would go back and total quadruple doubles for players prior to steals and blocks being official statistics.

Imagine how many quadruple doubles Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell would have.

Wilt Chamberlain Archives found three newspaper recaps of games where Wilt pulled off the feat:

 • 1967 EDF GM1 vs the Celtics: 24 points, 32 rebounds, 12 assists, 12 blocks
 • 1967 NBA Finals GM2 vs the Warriors: 10 points, 38 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 blocks
 • 1970 WDSF GM6 vs the Lakers: 12 points, 26 rebounds, 11 assists, 12 blocks

But back then, not NBA game had limitless press in attendance, so it really is impossible to know.

What happened to Hakeem Olajuwon’s 2nd Quadruple Double?

On March 3rd of 1990, The Dream racked up 29 points, 18 rebounds, 11 blocks and 10 assists against the Golden State Warriors. But the NBA disagreed and added a stat correction.

Here’s what happened:

Rockets coach Don Chaney and team media-relations director Jay Goldberg reviewed the game tape immediately after the final buzzer and “found” what seemed to be an uncredited assist for Olajuwon in the first quarter.

The team quickly issued a revised box score that credited Olajuwon for 29 points, 18 rebounds, 10 assists, and 11 blocks. Bingo! Quadruple-double achieved!

NBA director of operations Rod Thorn asked if he could take his own peek at the tape.

Three days later, Thorn announced his findings. Olajuwon didn’t deserve 10 assists, and the original box score that gave him credit for nine dimes would remain the official record of the game.

Three weeks later on March 29th, Olajuwon achieved his only quadruple double.

What’s more impressive – David Robinson Quadruple Double or David Robinson’s 71 point game?

Do you think we will ever achieve the absolute MAX of a quintuple double?

NBA Games On Christmas Day Schedule

The NBA season really doesn’t begin until Christmas Day. But what you may not know is that the tradition of the NBA Christmas day schedule started all the way back in 1947.

The current format of five NBA games on Christmas Day started in 2008. Prior to then, the most ever played was three on Christmas Day.

With the creation of TV and the accessibility to these games, the NBA decided to schedule games on Christmas that showcased the best teams and players.

The Knicks have played more Christmas Day games than any other team, with 53 total. They are 22–31 Christmas which is the most losses of any NBA franchise, and second most wins.

The Lakers are 23 and 23. Their 23 wins are the most of any team.

Surprisingly, the Sacramento Kings have the 3rd most wins on Christmas day – 18 – even though they have not played since 2003!

NBA Christmas Day Games 2020:

NBA Christmas Day Games 2020 Schedule

Love him or hate him, Kobe Bryant made as significant impact to Christmas Day games as any player in history. Bryant played 16 games on Christmas, the most of any player. Dolph Schayes, Shaquille O’Neal, and Earl Monroe each played in 13.

The home team is 144–78 in Christmas Day games.

Two teams have never been a part of the NBA Christmas day schedule; the Grizzlies and Hornets have never been included. Until the 2019 Christmas games, the Pelicans had never been included.

“The Big O” Oscar Robertson WAS the all-time leading Christmas Day scorer with a total of 377 points in 12 games. Until Kobe passed him with 395 in 16 games.

Most Career Points NBA Christmas Day

But for all-time NBA Christmas Day points per game, T-Mac reigns supreme (can we all take a collective moment to remember how great a scorer he was?):

NBA Christmas Day Highest PPG

The highest all time individual performance? Bernard King’s 60-point Christmas Day performance in 1984.

Like King’s 60 point game, there have been some other memorable performances on Christmas Day. Like Rick Barry’s 50 point game in 1966.

In 1992, Michael Jordan scored 42 points against a Patrick Ewing led Knicks squad en route to a 89-77 victory.

In 1972, Tiny Archibald set a Christmas Day record with 18 assists. That same year he would be the first player to ever lead the NBA in scoring and assists in the same season.

26 years ago Dominique Wilkins had 45 points, nine rebounds and three assists in a 106-100 Hawks victory over the 76ers.

As the popularity of the NBA has grown, so has the interest worldwide. This year’s NBA Christmas games will be broadcast in 215 countries in 47 languages and will feature 23 players from 16 countries.

Merry Christmas to everyone! Hopefully Santa doesn’t fill your stockings with coal, homeboy!

In the spirit of that, here’s a classic Christmas joint from Run-DMC that I’m sure we will hear during the games this year and, hopefully, for the rest of our lives:

<a rel=20+ years ago today, Mario Elie’s Kiss of Death three-pointer capped off a ridiculous comeback against the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix dominated the regular season for two years, only to be eliminated in the playoffs by the streaking Rockets both times.

From NBA.com:

“Houston’s Mario Elie sank a three-pointer from the corner with 7.1 seconds left in the game, lifting the visiting Rockets to a 115-114 win over Phoenix in Game 7 of their Western Conference Semifinal Round series at America West Arena. With the win, the Rockets became the first NBA team in 13 years (since the ‘82 Sixers against Boston) to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a best-of-7 playoff series. Houston’s victory also broke a string of 20 consecutive wins by the home team in the deciding Game 7 of a playoff series. Just 24 hours later, Indiana repeated that feat by the road team after downing host New York 97-95 in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal Round series.”

Check out the video here:

For Elie, it was the beginning of what would be a pivotal role during the Rockets run to the 1995 NBA title. After being a bench player all season, Elie was inserted into the starting lineup for the Finals and played the best basketball of his career. Elie averaged 16.3 points per game, almost double his regular season average, while shooting a 64% from the field. He was also 8 for 14 (.571) from the three-point line, hitting 7 of 10 three-pointers in Games 3 and 4.

The Rockets were already a ridiculously deep squad, so when Elie stepped up and started producing, the Orlando Magic had no answer as the Rockets romped to a 4-0 series sweep.

The shot Elie hit to seal the series victory over the Suns was particularly deflating to Suns fans. Not only because it ended their ’95 season, but the previous year in the playoffs the Rockets also defeated the Suns in a seven game series after the Suns opened up a 3-1 series lead.

Ouch.

Today in 1978 the NBA scoring title was on the line with one game remaining.

Thompson’s Denver squad played the Pistons in Detroit and David Thompson the “Skywalker” got off to a ridiculous start, setting an NBA record by making 13 field goals in the first quarter. Thompson sums up his feelings in his book, Skywalker:

“Not realizing what had just occurred — it all happened so fast — I was amazed to learn later that I had set an NBA record for most points in a quarter with 32. That beat Wilt Chamberlain’s 1962 mark by one, set in that historic game where Wilt scored 100 points. Equally stunning was my accuracy in that first quarter. I went 13-14 from the field (Poquette’s block being the only shot I missed) and 6-6 from the foul line.

“My 13 field goals were also a new NBA record, and it still stands to this day.”

He continued his torrid pace for the remainder of the game, finishing with a total of 73 points, the most ever for a guard in NBA history, until Kobe broke it with his 81 point game.

Remember though, neither Thompson nor George Gervin had the advantage of the three-point shot.

“I had been locked in a scoring duel with Gervin of the Spurs for much of the year. Only 14 points separated us at the top of the league scoring chart heading into our last games that Sunday.”

Speaking of Gervin, later that evening “The Iceman” poured in a cool 63 points (probably without sweating) and just barely edged out Thompson by the slimmest of margins, the closest in NBA history, to win the 1978 scoring title: 27.22 to 27.15.

After scoring 73 points, the first thing Thompson did when he got home was check in on Gervin’s progress.

“When I finally made it home, I scanned the dial on the radio and attempted to pick up the San Antonio versus New Orleans broadcast. If it had been any player other than “The Iceman,” I wouldn’t have even bothered. I caught the game early into the second quarter, and by halftime Gervin had fired in 53 points. I knew then that my 73 had been in vain.”

Even though Thompson lost the scoring title, his value as an NBA player was at its apex.

He was rewarded during the off-season with a record breaking contract; $4 million dollars for five years. That was the most any basketball player had been paid in NBA history. What do you think Kobe or LeBron James would say if that got offered that deal today? The game has come a long way.

The closest match-up in recent memory to the slugfest between Thompson and Gervin was in 1995 when David Robinson and Shaquille O’Neal went at it for the scoring title, which also came down to the final regular season game. Robinson scored 71 points and edged Shaq 29.8 to 29.3.

What a day for the future of the NBA. At the time it seemed like just another season opening game.

But the future of the league would never be the same. The greatest rivalry in the history of the league, maybe in the history of American sports, was born 40+ years ago right now.

Until Magic and Larry started to square off, NBA games were on tape delay, playa.

They saved the NBA from financial ruin, setting the standard for play and competition in the NBA for the next decades.

Larry Bird’s first game was a 114-106 victory against the Rockets in which he poured in a modest 14 points.

Interestingly also in the same game, the Celtics Chris Ford made the first three-pointer in NBA history.

Magic got off to a hot start with 26 points, asserting himself as the team leader right off the bat, feeding Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the ball for a game winning hook shot. Magic famously freaked out and jumped into Kareem’s arms, celebrating like they had just won the NBA title.

To which Kareem replied, “You know we’ve got 81 more of these, right Magic?”

Aside from their impact on the league, Larry & Magic had almost identical NBA careers.

Both had 13-year careers and made 12 all-star appearances.

Both won three regular season MVP awards; Bird won two NBA Finals MVP’s, while Magic trumped him with three.

Known for classic match-ups in the NBA Finals, Magic emerged with a total of five “chips” to Bird’s three.

In 18 career regular season head to head match-ups, Magic won 11 to Bird’s seven. Bird averaged 21.7 ppg to Magic’s 19.4.

In the Finals, the two foes faced off a total of 19 times, with Magic emerging victorious in 11 of those encounters.

Bird averaged 25.3 ppg to Magic’s 20.7. But scoring was only a small part of what both players brought to the floor and the rivalry.

The union of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson created the blueprint for all proceeding NBA rivalries and for the league itself.

Jerry West NBA Logo
Jerry West on the left…and Jerry West on the right

Today in 1974, Los Angeles Lakers guard Jerry West retired from the NBA.

Even if you’re just a casual NBA fan, you probably know enough about Jerry West to know that the NBA logo is based on his silhouette.

Think about that for a second.

If you retired from your job at Initech, even if you were the VP or CEO, or someone like Bill Lumbergh, there is no way that the company would ditch its trademark three-square logo for a silhouette of you sitting at your cube, with a mouse in your hand.

That is exactly what the NBA did when Jerry West retired.

But he didn’t use a mouse; he used a basketball in his cube, which, being an NBA arena, was substantially larger than your cube, even the exaggerated proportions you tell your family because they could never verify it, so why not tell a little white lie to feel good about yourself?

I’m right there with you.

He was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times, and was chosen as the All-Star MVP in 1972, the same year that he won the only title of his career.

West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3.

He was also a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams (one second, followed by four firsts), which were introduced when he was 32 years old.

Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team (1969).

West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and voted as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996.

If Jerry West were Milton, he would’ve never passed a piece of cake because he KNEW that you always miss 100% of the pieces of cake you DON’T take.

We can only assume that West never aligned himself with a TPS Report or has ever published a report on SharePoint.

And that is why he is a better man than both of us.

The post Today In NBA History 2002: Michael Jordan Returns For Washington Wizards appeared first on I-80 Sports Blog.

]]>

On September 26th 2002, the greatest basketball player of all-time returned to the court for the team he partially owned. It’s easy to forget how productive Jordan was in two years playing for the Wizards.

In the summer of 2001 Jordan expressed interest in making another comeback with the Wizards. Some people speculate that as a part owner, he did it to draw fans into the seats for the struggling franchise. Another perspective is that the return to the NHL by hockey legend Mario Lemieux, the Jordan of the ice, who was also a close friend of MJ fueled his decision.

Jordan spent much of the spring and summer of 2001 in training, holding several invitation-only camps for NBA players in Chicago. Jordan also hired his old Chicago Bulls head coach, Doug Collins, as the Wizards coach for the upcoming season, a decision that many saw as foreshadowing another return.

On September 25, 2001, Jordan announced his return to the NBA to play for the Washington Wizards, also announcing his decision to donate his salary as a player to a relief effort for the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In the 2001-02 season, Jordan led the Wizards in scoring (22.1 ppg), assists (5.2 apg), and steals (1.42 spg). He played in 60 games and a lot of people thought he was done.

The next season, Jordan’s last in the NBA, may be the most underrated season in NBA history.

During the 2002-03 season, Michael Jordan turned 40 years old. Of all major sports the NBA is probably the most unforgiving in terms of deteriorating skills. If you’re old and slow it can’t be hidden. Jordan wasn’t old and slow.

That season he played 37 mpg, second on the team only to Jerry Stackhouse. He was also second in points to Stackhouse (20.0 ppg), second in rebounding (6.1 rpg), fourth in assists (3.8 apg) and first in steals (1.5 spg). He was even fourth on the team in blocks of all things, with 0.5 bpg. He was also the only Wizards player to appear in all 82 games, starting 67 of them.

In 02-03, Jordan scored 20 or more points 42 times, 30 or more points nine times, and 40 or more points three times. Though it wasn’t rare for us to see MJ score 40+ throughout his career, the three games of 40+ represent the only times in NBA history a player over 40 years old has ever scored that many points.

And just for sticking around and reading this article, here are some highlights of a 1984-85 game between Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, just because it’s cool:

]]>

Today in 1984, the Chicago Bulls signed #1 draft pick Michael Jordan. And, they got the greatest basketball player ever at a discount.

Thanks to his ridiculous success as a professional, it’s easy to forget how great MJ was as a college player.

In 1981, as a freshman at North Carolina, Jordan was named ACC Freshman of the Year after he averaged 13.4 points per game on 53.4% shooting. He made the game-winning jump shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game against Georgetown, which was led by future NBA rival Patrick Ewing. Jordan later described this shot as the major turning point in his basketball career.

In three seasons at North Carolina, he averaged 17.7 ppg on 54.0% shooting, and added 5.0 rpg. He was selected to the NCAA All-American First Team in both his sophomore (1983) and junior (1984) seasons.

After winning the Naismith and the Wooden College Player of the Year awards in 1984, Jordan left North Carolina one year before his scheduled graduation to enter the 1984 NBA Draft. The ChicagoBulls selected Jordan with the third overall pick, after Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets) and Sam Bowie (Portland Trail Blazers).

So I was curious; what did the #3 overall draft pick, and future greatest player ever make during his first year under his rookie contract? $630,000.

Considering inflation, $630,000 in 1984 is like 1, 416,414.63 in 2013 money.

In year two, Jordan made $845,000 dollars, which translates to $1,899,794.23 in 2013.

Jordan made a shade over $90 million dollars in 13 years as a pro. But he made over two thirds of that in two years, earning $30,140,000 in 1996-97 and $33,140,000 in 1997-98.

People talk a lot about how LeBron James, thanks to the current CBA, can never be paid what he is actually worth.

But Michael Jordan set the precedent in that regard, as he did in so many other areas of professional basketball.

Today in 1979, Ann Meyers signed a deal with the Indiana Pacers. Meyers became the first woman signed by an NBA team.

Meyers remains as the only woman to ever sign a contract with an NBA team, signing a $50,000 contract.

She worked with the team through training camp before eventually being cut. But, it was not a publicity stunt, as Meyers was one of the best basketball players in the world at the time.

Meyers received an athletic scholarship to play for the UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team, the first woman to be so honored at any university. In a game against Stephen F. Austin on February 18, 1978, she recorded the first quadruple-double in NCAA Division I basketball history, with 20 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals. Since then, University of Tennessee at Martin junior guard Lester Hudson is the only other Division I basketball player, male or female, to have done so.

Meyers was a member of the US team that won the 1975 Pan American Games Gold medal She played on the US Olympic basketball team that won a Silver Medal in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

After she was cut, Meyers became a color commentator for the Pacers, one of few women to ever achieve that feat at the time. Since 1983, she has served as an ESPN analyst for various events including both men’s and women’s NCAA basketball games.

For over 26 years, she has served as a network television sports analyst for ESPN, CBS, and NBC.

To get Steve Francis, the Rockets were willing to trade roughly a third of their roster and make the biggest trade in NBA history.

On 8/27/13, the Vancouver Grizzlies, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic completed a three-team, 11 player deal.

(Related – Worst Trades In NBA History)

At the center of the deal was Steve Francis aka “Stevie Franchise.” Living up to his nickname, almost an entire NBA squad was traded to make room for his arrival in Houston.

The Vancouver Grizzlies traded the rights to G Steve Francis and F Tony Massenburg to the Houston Rockets for G Michael Dickerson, F-C Othella Harrington, F Antoine Carr (The Original Big Dog), G Brent Price, Houston’s first-round draft pick in 2000, 2001 or 2002, and the Orlando Magic’s 2000 second-round draft pick.

Orlando traded F Don MacLean to Houston, and received G Lee Mayberry, F Makhtar Ndiaye, G Rodrick Rhodes and F Michael Smith from Vancouver.

Francis went on to become the NBA Rookie of the Year and made three consecutive all-star teams from 2002-2004.

A year later the 11 player trade was eclipsed in size as 12 players were dealt in a deal involving the Knicks, Lakers and Supersonics on September 20th of 2000.

The Knicks acquired F Glen Rice, C Travis Knight and a first-round pick from the Lakers and C Vladimir Stepania, F Lazaro Borrell, G Vernon Maxwell, a first-round pick and two second round picks from Seattle in a four-team trade that sent C Patrick Ewing to Seattle; Los Angeles Lakers acquired F Horace Grant and F Chuck Person, C Greg Foster and G Emanual Davis from Seattle; The Suns acquired C Chris Dudley and a first-round pick from New York for C Luc Longley.

The largest trade ever occurred on August 2nd of 2005 and involved 13 players and five teams.

The Heat acquired F Antoine Walker from the Celtics and G Jason Williams, F James Posey and G Andre Emmett from the Grizzlies and the draft rights to C Roberto Duenas from the Hornets in a five-team trade that sent G-F Eddie Jones to Memphis, F Rasual Butler to New Orleans, a 2006 second-round draft pick, a conditional second-round draft pick, F Qyntel Woods and the draft rights to Albert Miralles to Boston; The Jazz acquired C Greg Ostertag from Memphis; Boston acquired C Curtis Borchardt from Utah and G Raul Lopez from Memphis; New Orleans acquired G Kirk Snyder from Utah.

Strangely, Antoine Carr was involved in two of the three largest trades in NBA history. There’s some trivia to stump your friends with, playa.

Today, New York Knicks legend John Starks turns 53 years old.

I checked the date, I double checked, I triple checked but as of today, John Starks is 53 years old. Which is amazing to me because he still looks like he could play. But on a much more selfish note, as a guy who grew up watching Starks work his Svengali like magic, if John Starks is 53, then I am no spring chicken either!

John Starks was the epitome of the old saying “The instigator never gets caught.” Everything about him was annoying to opposing teams. His face. The way he ran up and down the court. His voice. The way his mouth never looked like it was completely closed. He really was the ultimate instigator on a team of large, physical, angry men. When Pat Riley got hired as the head coach of the Knicks prior to the 1991-92 season he changed their entire style of play.

Seeing how well it had worked for the Detroit Pistons, Riley’s Knicks decided to play like the “Bad Boy” teams of the late 80’s and early 90’s, Starks filled the role of Dennis Rodman for his team. And it worked.

The physical, defensive style of play was more like hockey but it made a Knicks team that was limited talent wise, one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference thanks to their disruptive antics. A season after finishing four games under .500 the Knicks won 12 more games the following year. Then an additional nine the next year. Then the following year lost in the NBA Finals to the Houston Rockets. The merger of John Starks and Riley keyed it all.

In key moments throughout his entire career, whenever the Knicks needed a spark, Starks was the man. And as soon as shit got thick Starks would generally recede from view and let Charles Oakley handle it, because if Starks was Tie Domi, Oakley was Bob Probert, the “enforcer” who could finish the job, the goon nobody wanted to mess with.

Occasionally Pat Ewing would get involved but largely the team did a great job of protecting him, the “star” and franchise player. Anthony Mason, and even Charles Smith, had Starks’ back and you could see the Knicks as a team genuinely get a rise out of Starks and the energy of the team would change. And Starks would just slither away once the ruckus was created and never be assigned any blame.

Though his role was that of an instigator, Starks was a very good guard and his career as a journeyman prior to his NYK days is truly inspirational. He averaged double figures for nine straight seasons, topping out at 19.0 ppg in 1993-94. He was the first player to make 200+ three pointers in a season. He was the Sixth Man of the Year.

But for as much as being remembered as the ultimate instigator, Starks dunk in the 1993 playoffs is one of the NBA’s all-time indelible images. “The Dunk” was vintage Starks, playing above his head, doing something no one thought he could do. “The Dunk” was unbelievable. Almost as unbelievable as thinking Johns Starks is 48 years old.

Happy birthday, John Starks!

In 2002, Lakers legendary announcer Chick Hearn passed away. Hearn’s voice may be the most recognizable of any announcer in NBA history.

In terms of legacy and impact not only on his teams organization, but the sport as a whole, there are only a handful of announcers who have had the kind of impact Chick Hearn did.

Hearn broadcast 3,338 consecutive Lakers games starting on November 21, 1965 and ending with midway through the 2001-02 season on December 16, 2001 when he underwent cardiac bypass surgery. After the surgery he was pumping gas and fell, breaking his hip, which kept him out even longer.

But Hearn returned; the final Lakers game he called was Game 4 of the 2002 NBA Finals where the Lakers defeated the New Jersey Nets to win their third consecutive NBA championship.

Aside from having a singular voice that essentially defines the Lakers thanks to broadcasting the biggest events in the history of the franchise, Hearn made lasting contributions to the sport as well.

Hearn is credited with inventing the terms “air ball”, “slam dunk” and “no harm, no foul.” He also did games on both radio and TV which was almost unheard of at the time.

During the summer of 2002, Hearn suffered a fall at his home and hit his head. Three days later, on August 5, 2002, Chick Hearn died from his injury. He was 85 years old.

Hearn is most known for his work with the Lakers, but he had a particularly varied career with success in sports broadcasting.

From 1956 on, he called USC football and basketball games, the US Open, the Rose Bowl and even the first Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali fight, to name a few.

RIP Chick Hearn.
